LO4 - Design of Pages

This is the completed design for my Social media app that has been called 'Foodle', I have used one of the default fonts that Windows has so that it will be easy to use across various platforms.
The front page was designed to include access to every other page on offer, I have designed it so that every page links back to this one so there is a central hub that users can become familiar with.

The feed page contains a dedicated spot for advertisements that I have discussed in a previous post, I've done it this way so that users know what expect and the advertisements are unobtrusive and not effect the user experience.

This page is the messenger part of the app that truly makes it 'Social' it is fairly typical of a mobile app chat system except that it allows users to send others internal links to other parts of the app through the use of 'Tags'. Users can also hold down on others names as seen at the top of the page in order to access the users settings such as the report feature.

This is the settings page that allows users to customise the app. They can also click on the Privacy settings button in order to access the terms and conditions and also the About Us section of the application.

Accessibility and Web Standards-
In order for my app to abide by the W3C web standards (more information here) my application will be available for anyone that has an internet connection regardless of location or any other aspect, To add to this my application will be free to download to further accentuate this My Application will be at the standard resolution for all Smart Phones so that it will fit on the screen at the highest quality possible. In the settings part of my App I have included an Accessibility Features section so that users that may have disabilities such as Visual impairments or Muscle impairments, the customizable features here will include having the option to increase text size/colour and also touch-sensitivity so it is easy for users to press on things should their needs require.

LO3 - Planning the App

  Purpose -
The idea and concept for my Social media application is an app that allows users to socialize, discuss and rate different restaurants that they have been to. The purpose of this is to allow restaurants to gain a reputation and as a result business due to a 'word of mouth' style of feedback. The app will also allow users to leave comments and discuss their restaurant experience, as well as sharing photos of their dining experience and also private messaging users.

  Content -
The reason that I have decided to do this as a mobile app is as I believe that my content will work well and be easier to navigate through an app instead of a website as it used a lot of interactive elements and will also appeal more to the audience I have targeted (See next section).
The app will consist of four sections that the user can traverse through. The first section will be an interactive map that has restaurants tagged at their location, this allows users to click and view information on that restaurant and lead on to the rating part of the app or 'check-in' to the restaurant so it displays on their profile where they have been. The second section of the app will be the users profile, this is the place in which they can edit their own settings such as privacy and also customize the app more to make it feel personal, this includes uploading a 'bio' about themselves and also a profile picture if they choose, this is a classic element of a social media that is core to the user experience. The third section of the app will be the messenger section, this will allow users to message each other and have a 'share' option that allows them to send location marks to other users and chat with each other. The fourth section of the app will be the 'rating' system in which users can rate their restaurant experience.

   Target user & Membership -
The signup for this product would be free as most social media products are. Users would be able to register an account with any valid email address or sign up using a Facebook account, this feature allows them to easy post things across platform which is becoming more of a convention of social media products. It also means that it will be open to more of a user-base as its a simple 'click and sign up'.
I have made this as a mobile application because this is the most popular way for young adults to access websites and also stay connected socially, this is because Young people are digital natives and have grown up using this technology so they are both comfortable and familiar with this aspect of technology.
The target use for this product would actually be fairly broad, the only specific requirement needed to use this product would be somebody that enjoys going out to eat food at restaurants and venues. However specifically the demographic for this type of Social media would be Young Adults aged 20-28 in the ABC1 category. This is because the majority of people in this age range were born and grew up with the bloom of social media and are technologically native, they are used to frequently using social media while also going out to eat and because of this would be the type of people who would get full use out of this product.

Possible revenue streams -
There will be two types of way in which this social media will make money to start with, firstly there will be a small box in the top of the application which will have targeted cookie based advertisements that will be based on a users interest and search history, this is a typical type of internet ad and is a reliable source of income for an application as long as a lot of users continue to use the mobile app. The other type of advertising that will be used is a sponsorship format. Restaurants can pay to appear at the top of the list of available places that fit a users requirement, there will be a small symbol next to these that will let the user know that they are sponsored. Although this will be a less frequent form of income it will cost significantly more for a restaurant to appear at the top based on the amount of users who will see it.

Hosting -
The way that the hosting would work is that a company would be hosting all of the data from my application, such as the login information for each of the users, the images found on my application and all the connectivity between the user and the application. In order to get the hosting decided I would look at various companies and compare there prices, I would also research existing popular social media applications such as Facebook/Twitter and see what type of hosting they use.
After looking at various web-hosting services specifically designed for social media networks, I have decided to go with a company called Broadvision. They specialise in working with large databases such as MySQL. and as this network will feature a lot of information both on the restaurants and also user information I believe that they will be the best option for handling the large amount of information.

Software -
My social media product would initially be made and written in the coding language PHP. this is because it is one of the easier languages to learn initially while also being one of the more customisable ones and it leaves me room to expand and improve it as I learn more and the application gets more successful.  Another reason why PHP would be my best choice is because it works really well at loading graphics and other types of media really fast and as my app will be very visual then this would work well at keeping everything fast and uninterrupted, Pintrest and Instagram were initially coded in this language and then converted to other coding languages once they got more popular, this is why I think it will be a good starting point for my application.

Information flows and how pages link together -
The way to navigate the app has been designed in a way to be as easy as possible. There will be a 'main page' that has links to all the other sections of the app. I believe that this is the best way to navigate through an app on a mobile phone as there is limited room for navigation buttons as mobile screens can be small. Designing it this way will allow me to have all the features that I want while not making it difficult for the user to find what feature they need.

Consider users/members needs and how they will use the website & Justify your choice in relation to target user/membership usability -
A user will be using my social media app on their phone, A users login information would be automatically remembered once they login for the first time so that it is convenient for the user. They will be using the application to message other users and also share content such as images. I have provided easy to access features for the requirement of the users that I have listed above, also because of this I have made sure that all of the icons and ways to navigate the app are large enough for a user to access the various sections of the application. I believe that this will suit the usability of the members of my app as it is easy to use and find what the user is looking for.

Relevant legal and/or ethical issues are considered (copyright of images, data protection, SSL) -
My social media app will be fairly image heavy and as a result of this I need to make sure that the images that I am using in my app are not copyrighted, I will allow users to submit their images to the app themselves and make sure that my terms and conditions state that the images are not to be stolen from other users and allow the use of an optional watermark. For the data protection side of my app I will be using standard SSL security throughout to make sure that all the data that passes through my application is encrypted so that users can be assured that their details are kept safe.

Production plan with launch date and timescales that is realistic (complete research on how much it costs to create and app/social media website. full production plan – can you give yourself 6 months and backtrack) -
For the production of my social media application, I used this website to give me a realistic time frame for creating my application based on the average time it takes professional developers to create a social media application, I then composed my own gannt chart with all the tasks that will be needed to be done -

After conducting research on the costs of a social media application with all the development and design factors considered, I need to have a realistic budget of £15k-£25k in order to make the application as sleek as possible and make it be able to compete with the already popular social medias on the market. I think a launch date of October 2016 would be a realistic time for my application to be developed for.

LO2 Task 4 - Be able to generate ideas for a new social media website

a) purpose (what is the purpose of your website/app based on your LO1 research? What is the social media) My social media app would be a social styled restaurant reviewing app, the majority of the app will be an interactive map that users will be able to search on and view the location of restaurants and other food type venues. Users would be able to look at these restaurants and view all information about them and be able to read and post reviews and ratings. The entire purpose of this would be for users to gain information about places to go to eat and also interact with other users about their experiences here, although this is quite a niche app I believe that their is a gap for this.

b) format/style (what format does it come in (just website? Just  an app on a smartphone? In terms of style – house style, images, multimedia it supports?)  The format of this would be just an app for use on smartphones, the style would be very clear and modern looking so that it would fit in with the typical conventions of smartphone applications. The colour scheme for my app will be shades of blue and silver, this will look modern and also be unlike other type of applications that are on the market.

c) target user/membership (who is the audience? demographics? Why would the audience use it? Is it paid for or free to sign up?? How do people sign up?) The main type of audience for my application will be adults who often eat out and like to go online to view restaurants etc. The service will be free for people to sign up however companies will be able to promote their restaurants so they appear pinned on a users application.

d) mock ups (annotated wireframes)

LO1 - Task 3: Commercial uses for social media products

Facebook

Advertising paid for advertising -
Facebook Ads are targeted according to your Facebook Profile information: Your age, location, education, relationship status, interests like favourite movies, music and much more are available to advertisers that can access to aggregate data and reach the right audience for their ads. Depending on their goals and the product that they are advertising, advertisers can set a targeting filter to select which group of people will see their ad. This makes it possible to focus on or target the people most likely to be interested in the product, amongst the 500 million worldwide Facebook users. Facebook uses advertisements on the sidebars of the Facebook contains
  • Marketplace Ads
  • Page Post Ads
  • Promoted Posts
  • Sponsored Stories
  • Sponsored Results
Viral marketing aspects of promotional campaigns that are linked to and/ or passed around -
Advertisements and content trend through Facebook using a comment and like system, this makes it so things appear on multiple peoples feeds and spread virally like this. Facebook pages upload amusing content in the hopes that it will become viral and spread to other people and they can also post advertisements for other websites through this.

Product/service reviews advantages/disadvantages of user generated reviews, influence of ‘personal’ recommendation for others purchasing products/services.
Facebook has its own comment and even a review section that businesses can add to their places to allow customers to voice their opinions. This rating system has both its advantages and disadvantages, it allows people to see what other peoples opinions of the businesses are and depending on their experience it could influence other people to go or not to go and generate business.

Twitter -

Advertising paid for advertising - (e.g. pay-per-click/impression advertising, sponsored links, banner advertising)
Although twitter has a minimalistic design, it has quite a lot of areas in which are designated to advertisements. Twitter uses pinned tweets inside a users twitter feed so that they appear inside a users feed, a company will pay twitter so that their content will be targeted at a specific type of demographic, this demographic will have a criteria that needs to be filled, it will be based on a users tweets, profile information and who the individual follows.

Viral marketing aspects of promotional campaigns that are linked to and/ or passed around - in order for content to be distributed around on twitter they have a favourite and re-tweet system, the re-tweet system allows a user to re-send an existing tweet made by someone else so that it will appear to that users followers. Tweets are not just text, they can be graphics or short videos, these make the website appear to more types of people as their is visual stimulation.

Product/service reviews advantages/disadvantages of user generated reviews, influence of ‘personal’ recommendation for others purchasing products/services.
As most companies have a twitter account so that they can interact with their customers, users are allowed to publicly share their opinions and experiences with other users and the specific company. This allows other potential customers to get a understanding of what to expect.

LO1 - Task 2: Analyse positive and negative social effects of social media products

A) Facebook -
Positive
  • Because of the popularity of the Facebook website, a lot of people are registering and becoming users of the application. Because of this, the website has become a common ground for people which results to finding your old friends, relatives and family members. This makes it easier for you to interact with them, and coordinate with them.
  • The number of users will be the market of any advertisement posted in the website which is why businesses are taking advantage of this opportunity. Facebook could greatly benefit these businesses by increasing their income through advertising.
Negative
  • Facebook Has a Negative Impact on the Concentration of Students, about 70-75 percent of high school students are falling behind in class because they spend many hours on Facebook.
  • Some users of facebook use it to stalk other people, they don't see the harm in using it for this as it is online and they are at no risk of being caught, it seems to be an acceptable part of everyday life for people to go and openly read information about other people they do not actually know.
  • In the world of social media and online networking, the issue of safety continuously arises, particularly among teenagers.  Cyberbullying, bullying that takes place using electronic technology, has unique challenges when compared to more traditional forms of bullying.

B) Instagram -
Positive
  • Instagram can be used to humanise and personalise your business. Posting behind-the-scenes photos or sneak peeks can give your customers or clients a personal insight into what your company stands for and represents.
  • Instagram can be used by users to find out what their friends are up to, they are able to follow and message them as a way to socialize with people that they know, they are also able to communicate with people they idolize such as celebrities and companies.
Negative
  • The biggest gripe coming from the photography world about instagram is that it devalues the art of photography and makes the acquisition and creation of a good photograph much too accessible. With the click of a button on your smartphone, nearly, anybody may acquire the façade of being a professional photographer.
  •  Instagram reserves the right to reproduce, reuse, and redistribute any image that users upload onto their feed. This not only creates a privacy concern, but also a financial one. This means that any photo posted onto the application may be used in advertisements and marketing campaigns both without your consent and without any sort of compensation.

C) LinkedIn -
Positive
  • It’s Who You Know, Not Always What You Know – A major rule of business revolves around who you know. The additional benefit with Linkedin is that you can see who the people you are connected with know.
  • If you have a job, plan to have a career, or want to someday do a task professionally, Linkedin is a great place to begin making connections that can and WILL be beneficial. It isn’t just for finding jobs, it’s for growing your business relationships. Even universities and students can now use Linkedin to benefit their professional futures. Check it out, as they just launched the feature about a month ago.
  • Most of the services offered by LinkedIn are free and it provides the user the opportunity to get an additional placement. Even though the danger of not accepting social networking for business is not measurable, the price of accepting it is very low. LinkedIn is also simple to use and thus it can be used by any person.
Negative
  • There is little integration with other data sources and social graphs. There is a wealth of information on other sites such as Twitter, Facebook, Github, etc. However, LinkedIn doesn't do an adequate job of integrating data from outside of LinkedIn into its product.
